Older machines connected through Modbus.
Plenty of good machines only speak Modbus. The edge gateway in your factory reads their registers and turns them into counts, stops and measurements in Frontlink, without replacing the machine or its control.
Modbus and Frontlink.
Modbus is one of the oldest and most widely used industrial protocols, found in PLCs, drives, meters and older machines. The Frontlink edge gateway reads Modbus TCP over the network, or Modbus RTU over a serial connection.
Registers, coils and inputs are mapped to counts, machine states and measurements, so machines that are decades old deliver the same data as new ones, without replacing their control.

- Data exchanged
- Counters, run and stop signals, speeds, temperatures and energy use
- How it connects
- Modbus TCP or RTU through the edge gateway
- Access
- Network or serial access to the device
- Typical setup time
- About a day per machine type, with the register list
What moves between them.
- Counts from the PLC
The counter register becomes output on the running order, per shift and per batch.
- Running or standing still
Status signals show when a machine stops, so downtime is measured instead of estimated.
- Settings and measurements
Temperatures, speeds and set points are read and stored with the batch.
How we connect it.
- We check the machine with you
We look at the PLC, the register list and how it is wired, often in one visit.
- The gateway reads, it does not write
Frontlink only reads registers. The machine's own control is not changed.
- Modbus TCP or RTU
Over the network, or through a serial connection for older machines.
Other integrations.
Where you see it in Frontlink.
- PerformanceFrontlink measures rate, downtime and scrap per line, per order and per shift. So you see where things go wrong while it still matters, and what an order really cost.
- Production and operatorsAt the line, operators see the order, the steps and the instruction for each step. Materials are scanned, checks recorded and the shift hands over digitally. No paper, no retyping.
Frequently asked questions.
Do we need the machine builder?
Sometimes, for the register list. Often it is in the manual or the PLC program already.
Can Frontlink control the machine?
No. Frontlink reads what the machine does. Control stays with the machine and the operator.
Can Frontlink read energy meters?
Yes. Many energy meters speak Modbus, so energy use per order or batch can be recorded.
Is the gateway reachable from the internet?
No. It only connects outward to Frontlink, over an encrypted connection.
